Solar—Commercial Uses

COMERCIAL USES FOR SOLAR WATER HEATING

Recreation facilities – Systems can produce hot water for showers and kitchens.

Agricultural and husbandry – Solar water heating can provide cost-effective systems that can provide sufficient hot water year round. Applications can include cleaning stalls, and animal slaughter processing areas.

Hospitals and medical clinics - are facilities in which large amounts of hot water is used. The Solar collectors mounted on roofs can provide a large percentage of the hot water required while make-up hot water is provided by back-up sources such as electricity or gas.

Correction Facilities - Prisons require a large amount of hot water for food processing, cleaning, sanitation, and shower facilities.

Office buildings – Systems can provide hot water for lavatories, lunchrooms, and ancillary hot-water-demand devices. Collectors are usually installed on a rack mount system.

Hotels and motels - These facilities require year-round availability of hot water for guest rooms, housekeeping, laundry facilities, and adjoining restaurants. Solar water heating systems are ideal appliances for hotels and motels as the load demand usually complements the peak operation of the solar system.

Laundries and dry cleaners - Commercial laundries, ranging from small coin-operated to large applications, require tremendous amounts of hot water. The more hot water a system has to produce, the more cost-effective it becomes. Large systems must be properly designed and installed.

Apartments and condominiums - Systems can be plumbed to individual units or into a central system that supplies hot water for the whole complex.

COMERCIAL USES FOR SOLAR WATER HEATING – POOL HEATING

Using solar energy to heat swimming pools is a common application of solar energy systems. A variety of solar pool collectors and systems are available for condominiums, apartments, tourist resorts.

A solar system installed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics pool not only heats the pool water but when recirculated during the evening, cools the pool water to maintain the exact required water temperature.

COMERCIAL USES FOR SOLAR WATER HEATING – SPACE HEATING

Solar energy can also be used to heat indoor spaces, including offices and commercial buildings. This can be accomplished in two main ways. First, solar collectors can be used to heat ambient temperature air which is then circulated into the building. Second, solar collectors are often used to heat water which is then transferred to a space heating boiler or directly plumbed through radiators throughout the house.

Listed below are several examples of solar energy being used to heat indoor spaces.

Solar space heating systems use a transpired wall collector (a dark wall) in which tiny holes allow exterior air to enter and then trapped between it and the conventional exterior wall, heated and then exhausted into the building.

A similar transpired wall system can be used to heat indoor working spaces of massive warehouses and shipping facilities. These types of systems are easily installed and require little or no maintenance.

Space heating systems can also be used in residential applications by air-heating collectors retrofitted to a house. Of course, the collector should be mounted on the south-facing side of the house.
